What do Trees Teach us?

Even if they cannot talk, there is a lot we can learn from trees…

We really learn a lot from nature if we look at things closely. A simple act of taking a walk in the garden can give us an understanding of the true personality of nature and humans. It somehow elevates our sense of understanding, I believe.

A walk yesterday at a nearby garden somehow left me delving deeper into the anatomy of a tree and that of a human mind, too.

The trees there were very large, perhaps several years old. Their barks were tough and rough, grown all over the place. The bark branched out in different directions, growing thinner and thinner, until finally these were thin and green and holding leaves, which fluttered with the slightest wind. Some of the leaves had dried out and fallen off.

Thinking about the life of the tree and how it had come to become what it was now, I flashback-ed through its probable past. It must have passed through several stages from a supple stem to a hard strong one that was today.

This got me thinking. Perhaps, this is exactly how the human mind grows as well. We start off with simple experiences, some of are made stronger as we narrate them to others (or to ourselves) and they keep growing until we have a really strong core memory of sorts. These memories are carried forward into the branches and twigs, subliminally affecting each new day-to-day experience. Some of this daily learning falls off with time. So, if we make a mistake, we forgive ourselves slowly and the memory of the particular mistake simply dissolves into nothingness.

May be our mind does not grow in this fashion, but what if it does? Is it possible to create strong happy memories and get rid of the sad memories, like leaves?

Perhaps, we can do that. Perhaps, it will just need a little effort on our part to push out the unwanted memories from our system. One such technique is taught through Heartfulness and it is an effective one too.

For those who are not really the kind who would want to meditate, I believe, the best way to do this is by writing down the good memories in one diary and the bad ones in another. May be, once in 10 days, you can browse through this Good Memories Diary and see the effect on your psyche. Trust me, it will have a positive effect. You can try reading this diary when you are feeling low and see your mood change for the better, even if fractionally.

So let’s start creating happy memories! 😊
